Winning Essay

Sophie won first place in our annual holiday essay contest this year! She got to read it last night at the tree lighting ceremony we have here. People from all over the community gather at the local university to hear the choir sing Christmas carols, watch a small parade with Santa in the firetruck, hear the mayors from both Monmouth and Independence speak, hear the winning essay, and see the giant sequoia tree lit up for the season. After she read her essay, she was the one who got to light the tree. It was really cool! We're so proud of her!

Christmas Dresses

The girls got Christmas dresses from their Grandma Bevans so we had to have a photo opportunity.

Sophie got Elfed!

Hey, Sophie just made a total elf of herself. (Couldn't get any pictures of the others to load for some reason, so it's just her). Check out her sweet dance moves by clicking the link below.

Family Picture by Todd Bevans

Janelle had us draw family pictures for our last Family Home Evening. This was Todd's version: Him (as a muscle man), me (in a bikini), Sophie (reading Harry Potter), Janelle, Brooke (cutting her hair), Claire (eating a banana - the one food she truly gets excited over), and Phoebe.
Sophie added everyone's thoughts. Todd: "I'm strong." Me: "Do I have to pose like this?" and "I hate this bikini." Sophie: "I can't believe Dumbledore died." (sorry if I just ruined that for anyone who hasn't read that far yet...) Janelle: "Should I tell Brooke to stop?" Brooke: "Mmmmm. Should I snip some more?" and "Maybe if I cut more off Mom will not nodice." Claire: "Nana, nana, nana" Phoebe: "Should I jump on Claire?"

Gum Disaster

Well I always knew if one of my kids was going to do it, it was going to be Brooke. Call it mother's intuition, or call it a self-fulfilling prophecy, but that child has been banned from scissors for most of her childhood in an effort to avoid this situation. Can you see the teensy wad of gum in the gigantic pile of hair? Luckily, it's not really obvious, she did an admirable job blending it with her bangs that are growing out, and the shortened portion still fits into a ponytail, so it could've been worse.

Shrute Success

Todd's been collecting autographs for almost two years now (there's a link to his collection down at the bottom of my blog page), and every now and then he gets a success from someone I actually care about (as opposed to someone from the cast of a nerdy show he likes called "Serenity"). So we were excited to receive a response from Rainn Wilson from "The Office". Hopefully the writers will get off their strike and get back to work soon!

Tagged!

I've been tagged...
RULES:
1. List the link to your tagger and also post these following rules.
2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog - some random, some weird, etc.
3. Tag 7 people at the the end of your blog also leaving the links to their blogs
4. Let them know they are "TAGGED" by leaving a comment on their blog.

Cami tagged me, and though I can quickly see these things getting out of hand, I'll oblige because it made me feel popular to be tagged :)

7 facts:
1) I picked up clogging a few years ago. Used to make fun of my mom for doing it, now I'm hooked. I guess we all turn into our mothers in some ways.

2) I can crochet quite well when I want to. I made Claire's blessing dress (although my friend Kymberly did the beautiful matching bonnet)

3) I spent two years of my childhood in the middle east and was baptized in the Red Sea. I also met George Bush Sr. while we lived there and I have his autograph.

4) I have a terrible sense of direction. If I go in a parking lot on one side and come out another, there's a good chance I'll be lost for a little while. One time Shanna and I were driving home from Tacoma at nighttime, trying to get on I-5, and since the sun was down and we missed the sign, we honestly didn't know until we saw the interstate sign whether we'd hit Canada or Oregon first.

5) One talent I always wished I had was singing. I'm a camp song singer, that's about my talent level. But I sing anyway, just because it feels good to, even when my kids ask me to stop ;)

6) I have gone 30 years never having purchased feminine hygiene products for myself. It's not easy avoiding the monthly inevitable purchase, but what can I say, I'm dedicated. It's just too embarrassing. Although I thought it would be funny to ask a friend who manages our local grocery store where the tampons were EVERY time I went in just to watch him get uncomfortable (since I had absolutely no intention of purchasing them).

7) In over ten years of marriage, Todd can only definitively point out ONE time that I passed gas in front of him - and he only knows because I admitted it. I should have denied it, totally could have passed it off as a shoe scraping. I've spent nine and a half years regretting that moment of honesty.

I just gotta be me!

This lone blue hydrangea has been blooming in my front yard all season - I love how it refuses to blend in with the rest :)

Hermione and Frodo and Nacho, Oh My!

Here's a peek at our Halloween fun (be sure to read the last bit - I didn't have a camera to post a picture, but it's worth imagining!):

Sophie as Hermione and Phoebe as Dobby the house elf (Harry Potter):

Brooke and Janelle as Arwen and Galadriel, Elven Princesses, and Claire as Frodo (Lord of the Rings):
Todd and I as Nacho and Encarnacion (had the mask, had to use it!) (Nacho Libre) :While it may be shocking to note that Todd is so cooperative at Halloween, you need to understand that it's in our marriage contract. He knows I love it, so he graciously goes along. He gets his way in some things, I get my way in others :)

A few more pictures from our evening:
Lucia Bacio, Little Bo Peep

Janelle again, GaladrielClaire again, Frodo

Brooke again, Arwen
Our friend Pam as a Kiss band member - loved this costume! She'd probably dress like that every day if she could get away with it :)
And if only I'd had my camera with me earlier in the day when the kids at school did their Halloween parade, I surely would've posted one of the 4th grader dressed as a black cat with black tights, white undies and NO PANTS! I don't know how she got away with that one! Surely you'd think she was embarrassed, but as she walked past me she called out, "I don't have a tail." I thought to myself, "That's the least of your problems, girl! I can see your wedgie!"
