The big surprise

The girls were soooo excited to meet our new little puppy today! She's practically the cutest thing I've ever seen :) Sophie and Janelle were shellshocked when they first saw her, and Brooke thought the puppy was only for Sophie, so she was wondering why she got ripped off - always looking out for number one that girl! We had a lengthy family counsel on the subject of naming her. Janelle immediately liked the name Ginger, and Todd kept insisting on Muggle (and he's not even into Harry Potter!) because he thought, "she looks like a 'Muggle'" Could that possibly have anything to do with the fact that it rhymes with puggle and that's what she is (pug/beagle mix)? Sophie was partial to Suzy. I just wanted something feminine sounding. And Brooke was in Todd's pocket because he promised her a root beer float if she voted with him. For a while it looked like Muggle was going to win, but that would've been too hard for Sophie and I to live with. Eventually the others got hungry and just wanted a decision, so we considered the name Phoebe and had a consensus at last! I personally love it, and we all know that when mom's happy, everyone's happy :)

It's a Girl!!

Our newest little family addition arrives today. I can't wait! I have to say, labor (reviewing and learning about what kind of dog to get) and delivery (the plane ticket) were a lot easier with her than with the other kids. The girls don't know about her yet, so it's going to the be the surprise of their life when they get home from school today! (will post that video as soon as I can) The only thing I worry about is that this girl will get totally spoiled - I'm a sucker for that wrinkly little face and those big, sad eyes!

Crack in our schools

What's the deal with girls showing their butt cracks all over the place!? Whoever came up with the super-low rise jeans, obviously didn't think the whole thing through. It's hardly attractive, traditionally associated more with plumbers than with any kind of sex appeal (that's the first time I've used that word in my blog - I apologize, I'll try to be careful with it, I promise). And it's not just teenagers either. From Elementary through Middle and High Schools, every time I substitute in a class I invariably get accosted with some girl's "valley of shadow and death". At least the boys have the good sense to wear a ridiculously oversized shirt if they're going to buckle their jeans below their cheeks. As a representative teacher, and polite person in general, I'm uncomfortable pointing it out to the offending crackster, but I don't want her to be subjected to her merciless peers either, especially in the case of the younger girls who simply don't have pants that fit well. And I have to wonder, "How can she not know!!!???" Or at the very least, "Why does her mother not say anything?"

What do you think? Will this horrible fashion faux pas phase out soon enough? Or do we need to take a stand and start sticking things down there (garbage, pencils, small animals, whatever) until they all get the hint?

The fun never ends

After my wonderful breakfast in bed, we headed to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. (The kids got a kick out of the grumpy fish.)(Looks like someone dried her hands on the back of her pants :) ) It was such a nice day, we couldn't pass up a gorgeous afternoon at the beach. By the time we got home, we only had a couple of hours before we went out for the evening. Friends Larry and Amanda, and Dave and Tami joined us at a Roadhouse in Salem for dinner. Then we played a round of miniature golf, which I played characteristically bad, and dessert at Applebees (don't bother trying the fried bread pudding dessert - too soggy on the inside - though I hear the blondies and fudge cake are fabulous). It was a really great day - good for keeping my mind off the fact that I'm not getting any younger!

Happy Birthday to me!

Somewhere in the world, Kirk Cameron, Hugh Jackman, and Luciano Pavarotti are also celebrating their birthdays, but I bet none of them had their very own "b-day surprise cominity" [I think they were going for "committee" but got it mixed up with "community"]. The girls had their friends Keiana and Anne spend the night and they all got up at 6am and got to work. I heard little voices whispering things like "how do you spell your mom's name?" "A-L-I-S-I-N", and Brooke and Janelle sneaking in to my room asking me what my favorite animal was. I was tired and answered "elephant" and then "pygmy goat" for some reason, to which they asked, "How 'bout a dog or a cat?" The whole "cominity" (with official badges on even) brought me breakfast in bread, including a chocolate chip cookie, and a shoulder and foot massage! And there was only one hair in my toast :) What a wonderful morning!

Gourdgeous!

We saw this fall craft idea in the Family Fun magazine. The girls had a blast. Super easy, just hot glue leaves, pine cones and whatever else you can find outside onto gourds or squash.
