Missouri fun

Whoever dubbed Missouri 'Misery' must've been there in late August. So much heat and humidity and bugs, it's unbelievable. But absolutely gorgeous! Green and lush and spacious. The cicadas at night are so loud - it's really a cool sound. And my dad swears that it's only that hot the last 2 weeks of August (of course, he'll say practically anything to get us all to move out there). There are tons of gorgeous houses out there too. I love old houses, at least when they're kept up, and Missouri was full of them in all different styles. Of course it was also full of trailers (or "Missouri bungalows" as my dad calls them). Not so pretty, but I guess you live how you can.

After the wedding we spent time hanging out, playing games, riding the 4-wheeler, playing with puppies and riding the horses. We had such a fun time! Could that be partly because I didn't have all my kids with me??? Maybe. But I did miss them and was glad to know they were having tons of fun with Grandma Bevans. Here are some pictures of our Missouri fun:
The Mighty Mississippi River covered in lily padsThere's lots of bugs, but at least some are pretty
This was a model house we used for our luncheon after the wedding (Jaren's family had connections, we didn't just walk in and make ourselves comfortable)
And this, unbelievably enough, was the sign for those houses (West coaster's won't believe the prices!)Riding the 4-wheeler with Claire (take a deep breath all you panicky mothers, she was tied on tight to me and we took it pretty slow)
Meg had a litter of puppies at her house she was supposed to sell for the breeder. Claire loved them!
So did I, I almost bought one on the spot. These ones are puggles, mix of a pug and a beagle. (I'm holding out for the next litter of these which is supposed to be even smaller and cuter!)Meg gave me some riding lessons. My bum was a little sore, but it was worth it!
Shanna's little Tommy, Pook's baby Andy, and Claire. Aren't they too cute!

Congratulations Jaren and Kristin!

Kristin's Bridal Shower

Warning! Bridal showers are usually rated PG 13, and not necessarily good places for dads or brothers, so beware!

Kristin's bridal shower took place on the day there was a massive storm that wiped the power out and shut down highways because of downed utility poles. So we switched the venue to my parents' house at the last minute, which still had power. Inspite of the weather related chaos, it was a good time. Meg prepared tons of great food (so you know I was happy) and Shanna did some fun games.
As her sister, I felt it was my duty to embarrass her (and apparently Pook and some of Kristin's friends felt the same way). Here is a picture of her right after she opened a book that I'm too embarrassed to even write the title of:

I love the look on her face when she got Pook's present. It was a gift basket complete with Saran wrap, whipped cream, and baby wipes, etc.:

My gift came in stages. Stage 1: "Make your own lingerie"

What can't you do with a pair of scissors and some cotton briefs?

Stage 2: "Crochet your own lingerie"

crochet hook and dental floss

Stage 3: "Eat your own lingerie"

a candy bra (thanks to my classy sister-in-law Kim, but I couldn't resist passing this one on...)

Stage 4: "Actual lingerie"

with a disclaimer inside which read something like: "Warning! Underwear may cause husbands brain to cease normal functioning. Babbling and drooling are normal. Do not allow husband to drive or operate heavy machinery while you are in these. A DUIU (driving under influence of underwear) can be dangerous and may result in a heavy fine..."

"Need four more monkey's for the zoo?"

A couple days after we went to Enchanted Forest, we planned a trip up to the zoo on $2 Tuesday (just as a side note, with the crowds, smell and lack of parking, I think I'd rather pay full next time and avoid all that). With Brooke's last experience, she was wonderfully quick to obey this time around so as not to miss out again. Minus the abundant b.o., it was a fun day!
I think I accidentally erased all my pictures from this day (bummer!!) so you'll have to imagine the fabulous one of Claire and the orangutan staring at each other :)

Enchanted Forest (or "Poor Man's Disneyland")

We were determined to take a trip to the Enchanted Forest before the summer was out, but with the wedding and camping, we were running out of weekends fast! So we set the date and planned a whole family outing. The day before we were going to go, I gave each of the girls a list of chores they were supposed to get done in order to go. As was typical, Sophie wasted no time getting hers done, and Janelle was quick to follow Sophie's lead. Brooke laid around whining off and on, dawdling, distracting herself with other things to do...I reminded her periodically of the time, and the consequence if she didn't get her things done. But what can I say, she's a procrastinator (she comes by it honestly, from Todd). I knew she would wait until the last 15 minutes then try to furiously get it all done. When the timer went off, she wasn't ready. Though it breaks my heart, sometimes that girl needs to go to the school of hard knocks to learn. So Todd stayed home with her and Claire (who, it turned out, was sick that day anyway), and I got to go with Sophie and Janelle. It wasn't all a loss. The extra admission money went to ride tickets.

It's a terrible picture, but does anyone from Monmouth recognize Rebecca Wagner here as the princess?

And Robyn, remember when I was wondering why the father at my kids' school looked like Abraham Lincoln? I finally figured it out. It's his job. (cool job)

So much to write, so little time!

Whew! We've been busy, so I haven't updated for a while. Still have to download some pics to catch up on everything. Between Enchanted Forest, zoo, wedding, puppies, and so on, there's a lot coming when I get a moment. I just got back from a trip to Missouri for Kristin's wedding. It was just Claire and I (the girls stayed with Grandma Bevans) and we had such a fun time! I'll have lots to write on when I get a spare second. Now I'm off to pick up my girls!

Everybody Loves Amber

Is there anyone who has known Amber and hasn't adored her? I've been lucky to have known her for so long, and especially to still be so close. Near the end of high school, I remember having a conversation with her about where we would be in 10 years and wouldn't it be sad if we didn't even know each other anymore? I'm pleased that 11 years later, my "BFF" lives just two blocks north of me :) Here's a read down memory lane in honor of Am-bear:

This was what she signed in one of my middle school yearbooks. She had a "thing" about the Joker from Batman. Dressed up like him for Halloween actually - I wish I had that picture.

This is how Amber signed my freshman yearbook - complete with notes to my future husband and kids.

This is Amber's Sophomore picture - cute, huh?

And this is what she signed on the back

This is Bernat, the exchange student we had one year from Spain. (Two years actually, and the second year the Olympics were being held in Barcelona, his hometown. I don't know why he came to our house - we never even had good food.) May seem out of place, but she knows why it's here. This one's for you, Amber

This is a picture of Amber and I in a group photo for FBLA. I wasn't actually in FBLA that year, I was just waiting with Amber to go to lunch and got in the picture.

At the Senior All-Night Party (as if either of us can play basketball!)

Graduation - it's hard not to graduate from PHS
Senior Pictures

Amber got to go on a trip after high school with her mom to Hawaii. No, I wasn't put out for not getting invited..."My best friend went to Hawaii and all I got was this dumb postcard"

At OSU 1997, right around the time Robyn and I tricked her into making us a second strawberry pie and I first saw the wrath of Amber. After a thousand other pranks, that was the one that put her over the edge. I haven't had much fun since. Goodbye to the old days of fake broken ribs, crumbs in underwear, false accident reports, strewing undies all over motel rooms, grossing out to get a good gag, dares to run around Rae Ann's house with nothing but a smile on...the world seems a little less bright to me now.

Camping at Honeyman in Sep. 2002 (I could tell a heck of a story about one of these camping trips involving a bucket and the tent, but I don't know that she would forgive me for it)

On our trip to Vegas in April '07 (Could her little Natalia be any cuter? I don't think so.)
What kind of a mother takes her one-year-old into a casino to play the slots!?
Thanks, Amber for so many years of friendship. Let's make sure we're still close 10 years down the road.
