Reunion at Mt Rushmore

Out of order with lots of white space, because that's how Blogger loads up pictures and I don't have the time/energy/patience to clean it up, here are pictures from our family reunion to Mt Rushmore (ok, it was too annoying and I cleaned up the extra blank space, but I'm not putting them in order!)

Almost back home- a picture of Mt Hood

At the Eye of the Needle

across the Eye of the Needle, just over 8 feet at the narrowest spot, the car could barely squeeze through

going into the Eye of the Needle. The roads were full of tunnels and rock formations and switchbacks and gorgeous scenery, but my attention was mostly on staying on the road and less on getting good pictures

Cathedral Spires

A donkey getting friendly

Who'd have guessed there was a section of the Berlin Wall in South Dakota?

At Reptile Gardens

Brooke flossing the dragon thingy's teeth

Brooke in time out

nothing more threatening than a bad guy with a binkie

she's comin' to get you!

"I want to be big"

Awwww, baby and mommy

such a pretty lizard at the Reptile Gardens

Pretty frogs - made me think of Robyn, my frog loving friend

nasty albino python - these girls are braver than I am

giant tortoise - older than dirt

baby alligator

crocodile or alligator - can you tell? I think it's a crocodite - teeth on the outside when mouth is closed

a little baby bird that fell out of the nest during a wind storm at our campsite...so sad!

Brooke wanting to help baby bird, but couldn't touch it or the mom would reject it

Andy sleeping like a man (on top of the luggage for some reason)

cutie little Eden!

Dopey with Dopey

Grumpy with Grumpy

A caricature artist did this of my kids

"A whole new world..."

Beautiful princesses (fighting over prince charming?)

At Cosmos Mystery Tour - the coolest place in South Dakota. It was so bizarre - pictures and video should give the sense of this crazy place! It was so illogical and as brilliant as I am, I could not make sense out of it!

My girls, my mom and my sister with her baby Talmage

This chair is just staying like that, with or without the girl sitting on it, it's not touching the wall, and the back legs are not attached to anything!

everyone leans at this weird angle, the cabin is built crooked, but that doesn't really explain the pull that exists besides gravity in this place

It's like I'm flying! Leaning out from the corner yet not falling - it was crazy weird

hanging from a bar in the middle of the room, my legs were inexplicably pulled towards one corner of the cabin

outside of the cabin in one of the other "hot spots" of unexplainable phenomena, the trees curve towards a central point without any normal reason for doing so, like they're pulled same as the pull towards the corner of the cabin (another "hot spot")

The lady on the left seems much shorter than the man

but when they switch places, she's nearly the same height!? The platform is level, a ball doesn't roll and a carpenter's level shows it to be even also

Some background on the place:

celebrating 8 grandkids' birthdays within a one month period (and four more kids that didn't make it camping also have birthdays in the same time period!)

Janelle, Brooke, Lochlan and Grandma's right arm

Did you know this was how Mt Rusmore was supposed to be finished? But the artist died too soon.

Something Fancy

Love Story Part 2

Matthew's mom (Matthew is Claire's love interest) videoed Matthew's reaction to Claire's declaration of love video. It's pretty fantastic, and it is clear to see why he is such a great potential husband :)

Dear Santa Claus

I found this letter after cleaning out an old desk, and will be forever grateful that I looked at it before assuming it was garbage and tossing it out:
"Dear Santa Claus, I was good this year. I want a cilver necklace with a dark blue dimond on it. (Like in Titanic) This is what it looks like. Thank you. Love, Sophia"

Here's what I was thinking:

1. Love the fancy curly handwriting

2. How old must she've been? Probably about 6

3. What is a 6 yr old going to do with the Heart of the Ocean diamond?

4. Didn't she see at the end of the movie that the old lady dropped it in the ocean?

5. She really should've at least donated it to charity or something

6. Think how many starving kids she could've saved! What a waste.

7. What the heck was I thinking letting my 6 yr old watch "Titanic"?

8. Don't call child services on me...I'm sure I was careful to edit it...I think

9. I hope she wasn't too disappointed that she didn't get it.

Happiness is a Giant Flower

Foxgloves are one of my most favorite flowers, and I've been trying to plant them for years without success. I guess this is the year of the foxglove for me. This particular one is definitely an overachiever, and it actually makes me happy every time I pass it. So you can be jealous of my purty foxgloves, here are some pictures:

The Power of Justin Beiber

I found this writing assignment of Sophie's this morning and it made me laugh, so I thought I'd share:

You've met Batman, Spiderman, and Wonder Woman; Now meet...Bieber Fever! He takes down villians with a single flip of the hair. His singing makes dogs pee, pigs squeal, and mirrors crack. He shoots his own brand of nail polish out of his fingernails.

When he and Lady Gaga got in a cat fight, she threw meat at him, but she was no match for his powers. He has absolute control over the pre-teen population. With a snap of his fingers, he has everyone in the state wearing torture devices known as "skinny jeans."

Three-year-olds are reduced to tears by him, and teenagers get hysterics. How does he do it? He's Beiber Fever!

Love Story Part 1

Claire is in love. She's talked of little else for two weeks straight. I try to tell her she's only four, and there's plenty of time to plan for all that, but she's got it all figured out already. While I am mildly concerned about her level of passion, I am grateful that she is backing off the plan of marrying Todd, because it involved disposing of me. She pursued her preschool love interest pretty aggressively (which gives me cause for concern), and apparently he has acquiesced. Here is a glimpse of the passion of a 4-year-old:

But then who wouldn't want to marry an accomplished ballarina and tap dancer? She had her first recital last week, and it was cuter than cute (if only my video camera operators were not crappier than crappy):

(She was just doing her dance number titled "Funky Feet" and sang it as "Pumpkin pee")

And Eden is FINALLY walking! She took her first steps forever ago, but it's taken her a while to decide that walking is more efficient than crawling or scooting. I know my mom loves this beginning walking stage, so I took some video:
