The Hiding Place

If you've ever read, "The Hiding Place", this will mean something to you. And if you haven't read the book, you REALLY should, but this paper contains spoilers, so beware. I found this self-assigned essay in a drawer the other day, and was pretty impressed by it. Judging by the spelling tendencies, we think it was Janelle, but she did not wish to receive credit. Anyway, here it is: I read "The Hiding Place" to my kids a few months ago, and because it was a true story, I hunted down as many pictures as I could of the real people and places involved. It's a pretty heartrending story at times, so I softened it where neccessary, but the overall story of love and forgiveness is absolutely amazing. Here are some pictures from the story:

Busy Week

Wow - what a week we just had! We've had our friend Maren staying with us while her parents were out of town, and she was a great help with the girls who totally adore her. She played right along with them, and helped them get the things done that they needed to. It helped me get way more done than normal! Monday we had up to 11 kids here at one time between neighbors and friends, so the kids had a blast but the mom got to do laundry all day long :( Tuesday was my one day/mo. to go to Salem and try to get everything done. Gas prices being what they are, we simply can't afford to get out there very often so we try to do everything in one long day. Wednesday, my friend Maggie had rented a carpet cleaner and let me use it, so we took advantage of the opportunity and spent the afternoon washing carpets which desperately needed to be done! Then she brought over a pressure washer she had access to, so Thursday was spent pressure washing the house, deck, outdoor toys and all that stuff. It took 6 1/2 grueling hours of being soaking wet and grimy in 95 degree heat, but it was enormously satisfying seeing the difference it made. Maggie came over to help out with the kids, but instead she got the camera and took a lovely picture of me (rude!) Thursday night we took a break and went to the drive-in in Dallas to see Kung Fu Panda and The Incredible Hulk (both movies get a B in my book. I was really hoping for more from the Hulk movie, being the closet Hulk fan that I am). Since we had the deck already pressure washed, we had to use the opportunity to stain it on Friday. I'm never fully prepared for how big that task is. It took 9 1/2 hours with nearly everybody helping. The girls really did a great job pitching in, but they were ridiculously dirty at the end of the day. By about 9:30 at night, Maren and I finished up the last of it. It looks SOOOOO much better! (the super bright boards are 4 new ones we had to replace, I'm sure they'll blend better in time). Saturday was a payoff for a hard week. We went with our friends Larry and Amanda to Foster Dam to go waterskiing, and let the kids go tubing. It was a blast!

Soarin' Over Monmouth

Our little local airport here gives free plane rides to kids annually, so we decided to take advantage of the experience. Sophie was the only one old enough, so the twins missed out. She got to take a half hour ride in the sky over the town, ask the pilot all sorts of questions, and even try out some of the controls! I hope my mother-in-law has not suffered a heart attack yet :)
In her own words: "I liked going through a cloud, and looking at everything from way up in the air, and I liked getting to control the plane, going up and down and tipping left and right. I loved being 1500 feet above the ground. It was exciting!"

Cheesy Girl

Janelle didn't have to wait until her birthday for her desired block of cheese (reference to kidspeak). She earned an extra special treat, and this is what she wanted, along with some cranberry juice. I don't even know what to think...

Do You See What I See?

This is what I saw when I looked out my front window not long ago:Looks like any ordinary neighborhood street on a pretty afternoon, right? Wrong! Look closely, through the leaves in the tree across the street:
There is, in fact, a teenage boy walking, taped shoulder to ankle in masking tape! Hard to tell, but that's what it is. We figured out later he was just goofing off, there was no sadistic tape psychopath loose or anything (at least all of the psychopaths I'm related to were under close supervision.)

Good Enough To Eat

Claire saw this sour cream in the fridge, and convinced it was yogurt, she REALLY wanted to eat it. So I thought, "Let's see how she reacts, this could be funny."

You know that part in "Notting Hill":

"There's something wrong with this yogurt."

"It's not yogurt. It's mayonnaise."

"Right. That's it then." [continues eating]

That's what it was like. Undaunted, she ate on.

So then, one day we thought it would be funny to give her plastic play food at dinner to see what she would do. She started poking it with her fork, and when she realized it wasn't real, she was pretty annoyed with us for laughing at her. It reminded me of Brooke and Janelle at that age finding a plastic Oreo cookie. Brooke got really excited to eat it, tried to take a bite, then threw it across the room in dissappointment :)

Crazy Little Piggies

By some freak of nature, Sophie's toes don't match. Her left foot is like Todd's, second and third toe equally long, and her right foot is like mine, second toe longer than third. Weird, huh? Try to figure THAT out with a Punnett square!
